Through the layered assembly of both construction elements and acquired ingredients, grows the pizza kitchen in complexity and variety – expressing the multiple backgrounds and tastes of those coming Space Saloon invited a group of international architects, artists, and engineers to work with university students in designing and building exploratory projects and installations that were ground-zero for revealing, harnessing, and amplifying the elemental potentials of site. Projects ranged from large constructed base stations for observing the surrounding landscape, to artist-led installations focusing on aspects of geology, wind, and water. Additional lectures, tutorials, and performative field-recordings dealt with ephemeral aspects of place, such as sound, energy, and atmosphere.&nbsp; Through a series of curated workshops held in the high desert of Morongo Valley, California, students from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) and the International Program in Design and Architecture at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok (INDA) were trained in a combination of analog and digital surveying methods, environmental sensing technologies, hands-on building tools, and collaborative virtual design Climate Crisis is deeply entwined with other ongoing injustices and struggles, Space Saloon and Creative Migration hosted a safe, comfortable and non-judgmental space to verbally confront the topic of Solastasia, the paralyzing melancholia induced from environmental distress. During Field Workshop, hosted at the Institute for Contemporary Art Los Angeles (ICA LA), we prototyped the Climate Crisis Hotline. Similar to a confession booth or wishing well, our multi-faceted platform sought to validate individuals’ concerns and give everyone an opportunity to participate in a community dialogue. Through a variety of outreach and engagement methods we invited members of the public to connect, unwind and respond. It is our intention to collate this ongoing research and feedback into a live-archive; both our ‘behind the scenes’ office and immersive archive of voices will form an experimental tableau of collective aural expression. For five days, we conducted daily workshops both in person and remotely. Each workshop helped formulate questions, devise content, and conduct exercises about language surrounding eco-anxiety and environmental distress. Prominent environmental scholars and psychologists joined the dialogue to address the growing nomenclature of eco-anxiety. Each individual will arrive to the site with his or her individual unit – a series of rotating frames that can configure into a multitude of spaces based on personal need. These units have material limitations that prevent the individual from building complete solitary housing. However, as the individuals begin to form relationships – friendships, groups, romantic entanglements – the units can transform. These notations were transformed into orthographic drawings, which gave birth to an important discovery about the site, which dealt with a section of maximum and minimum elevation, and a section of nearly flat elevation, both 60 degrees from one another. These became the two main axes, that of the cardinal axis, and the other the topological axis. This discovery eventually led to the development of a program, which revolved around the idea of two opposing or contradictory programs having to co-exist with one another. The photographer, in his private studio, enters his house through the cardinal axis, then shifts to live and work within the topological axis. The artist, while working, is on display to the gallery, which is accessed from the topological axis, then shifts to the cardinal axis. Through a series of workshops themed around the construction of a mock theater production, students learned various digital techniques and skills each with its own specific relation to scenography’s varied disciplines: costume, lighting, stage, actors, props, etc. The goal of this course was to leave students with the ability to demonstrate simple NURBS and Mesh modeling techniques, 2D visualization skills (color, pattern, composition), rendering knowledge, basic visual scripting, and general workflows between Rhino 3D, Grasshopper and the Adobe Suite. The studio responded to the need for dignified, affordable housing and leveraged the potential of modular construction, strategic urban planning, community capacity building and industry systems. Each student individually developed a prototype through all scales – from connection details to urban plans – and undertook a holistic series of topics – including material studies, passive strategies, economic models, and scale mockups. Taken together, these projects formed an overall body of research, which manifested itself in a built prototype in Cape Town.
